Have you ever walked away from a conversation, knowing almost immediately that you hadn't responded the way you wanted? Maybe it was something you said, the tone you used, a question you failed to ask, or something you dismissed or rushed through because you thought you understood.

Sometimes we recognise it while the conversation is still underway. We feel ourselves becoming defensive or impatient and, strangely, seem unable to stop, almost as though we are both participating in the conversation and watching ourselves participate badly.

In the previous article, I explored what happens when making room for more reality means encountering something about ourselves we would rather not see. But recognising what has happened leaves us with another question:

What do we do when we realise we have drifted away from the person we hoped to become?

In learning and development circles, growth is often spoken of as though it moves forward. We learn something, become more capable, gain greater awareness, and gradually improve. There is certainly truth in this, but it does not describe many of our actual experiences particularly well. If you are like me, you seem to learn many important things more than once.

We can understand the importance of listening and still fail to listen. We can deeply believe in another person’s dignity and still become dismissive when frustrated. We can recognise the dangers of certainty and then become remarkably certain that our interpretation of a situation is correct. We can spend years thinking about humaneness and still occasionally behave in ways that are not particularly humane.

Knowing better does not guarantee that we will always do better.

Perhaps becoming more capable of living according to what we value does not mean eliminating our capacity to move away from it. We are also creatures of habit, relationships, emotion, culture and circumstance. Maybe part of becoming is recognising when we have wandered and developing the capacity to reorient ourselves.

All sorts of conditions make this difficult. Fear can narrow our attention, exhaustion can erode our patience, urgency can lead us to see a particular relationship as an inconvenience, and belonging to a group can make disagreement unexpectedly costly. None of these absolves us of responsibility, but they remind us that our behaviour does not stem from our values alone.

This is why I tend to feel uncomfortable with approaches to human development that quietly divide people into those who possess the desired qualities and those who do not, and that portray people as though particular capacities become permanent characteristics once acquired. We can be compassionate and courageous in one circumstance and surprisingly indifferent or fearful in another. Open to examination until the thing being examined becomes something we desperately want to protect.

Perhaps humaneness is less something we possess than something we continually practise.

That also changes what failure can mean. If I expect to behave humanely at every moment, a contradiction becomes evidence that something is fundamentally wrong with me. But if humaneness is a practice, a contradiction can reveal something else: where my capacity narrowed, what I was protecting, who experienced the consequences, and what reorientation might require.

Reorientation does not mean pretending nothing happened. Nor does it necessarily restore a relationship to what it was. Some consequences remain. Trust may have changed, and another person is under no obligation to participate in my desire to repair what happened.

Maybe reorientation is not losing ground at all. We return to what we value, carrying more reality than we had before.

If leadership silences someone, it cannot be resolved simply by reminding them that participation is a value. They may realise that their behaviour can contradict that value. The question is whether that knowledge will change their participation next time.

This is where reflection becomes important. Without examining what happened, experience can reinforce habit—becoming defensive, explaining why that defensiveness was justified, and becoming slightly better prepared to defend that position next time. But remaining with what happened is possible; maybe a pattern gets recognised.

At first, perhaps it’s noticing afterwards. Eventually, recognising as it happens. Maybe one day, noticing a familiar response rising, with enough space to choose how to respond.

Is it possible to become people who never lose our way? That feels suspiciously like another version of impossible perfection, because we will still become frightened, impatient, defensive and certain. We will sometimes fall short and discover that our behaviour contradicts what we most sincerely believe.

Perhaps who we become is shaped not only by the moments when we live our values, but also by how we respond when we realise we haven’t. Can we acknowledge what happened without disappearing into shame or defensiveness? Can we repair what can be repaired and accept what cannot? Can we let what became visible change how we participate next time?

Maybe becoming more humane includes becoming better at finding our way back.

Not to who we were before, but to one another and to what we value, carrying a little more of reality.

In the previous article, I explored what it might mean to make room for more reality, resisting the temptation to reduce what we see to what already fits our understanding and instead remaining open to what else might be there.

I have continued to think about that, partly because there is something rather comforting about the idea when the reality we are being asked to consider lies somewhere outside ourselves.

Perhaps I have misunderstood someone else. There may be a perspective I have not considered, an experience I have not encountered, or something happening within a system that has remained outside my view. These discoveries can certainly challenge us, but they also leave something important largely undisturbed. I am still the person doing the considering. I am looking outward, trying to understand more fully what is happening around me.

But what happens when the additional piece of reality is me?

What happens when what I am being asked to consider is not simply that I have missed something, but that something I have said, done, supported or failed to notice has contributed to the very thing I would ordinarily say I am against? I have been sitting with that question because I suspect this is where consideration becomes considerably more difficult.

It is one thing to say we should remain open to reality. It is quite another when reality threatens something we believe about ourselves. Most of us carry a story about who we are. I imagine we need to. We understand ourselves as caring, competent, fair, thoughtful, inclusive, responsible, perhaps even courageous. These stories are not necessarily false. They have been shaped by our choices and experiences, by what others have reflected to us, and by the values we have tried to live by.

The difficulty arises when something happens that does not fit.

Someone tells me that something I said caused harm. A decision I believed was fair produced an inequitable outcome. A colleague experienced my leadership very differently from how I understood it. Something I thought I had handled well turns out not to have been handled well at all.

Suddenly I am holding realities that do not sit easily together:

• I believe I am a caring person, yet I caused harm.

• I believe I am fair, yet I participated in something unfair.

• I believe I am someone who listens, yet someone is telling me that I did not hear them.

I wonder whether part of what makes these moments so difficult is that we experience the second reality as cancelling out the first. If I caused harm, perhaps I am not caring. If I participated in unfairness, perhaps I am not fair. If I failed to listen, I may not be the person I thought I was.

It then becomes remarkably easy to stop reflecting on what has happened and to begin defending who we are.

I recognise this impulse in myself. The almost instantaneous search for the missing information that will slot the source of my discomfort into a version of events I can live with. I want to explain what I intended. I remember the circumstances. I notice what the other person did. I find the exception, the misunderstanding, the bit of context that has somehow been overlooked.

Sometimes those things genuinely matter. Context, intention and people’s actions matter. Consideration does not mean automatically accepting every interpretation offered to us as the complete truth. I believe there is a difference between bringing more reality into the picture and using additional information to make an unwanted part of reality disappear. That distinction feels important.

If our primary objective is to preserve a particular understanding of ourselves, there will always be realities we cannot afford to see.

This becomes even more complicated when we attach our identity to something we care deeply about. If I have committed myself to justice, inclusion, compassion or some other expression of human flourishing, evidence that my behaviour has contradicted those commitments can feel especially threatening. The stronger my conviction that I am not among those who do that, the harder it may become to recognise the moments when, in fact, I do.

Perhaps this is one of the strange ways our perception of our goodness can get in the way of our growth. Not because our values are unimportant. Quite the opposite; they give us something towards which to orient ourselves. But there is a difference between being committed to a value and needing that value to be an unquestionable description of ourselves.

The first can invite examination. The second may make examination threatening.

This keeps returning me to several thoughts about failure. We tend to treat failure as evidence of deficiency, something to hide, explain away, or distance ourselves from. Yet failure can also contain information. It can show us where our understanding was incomplete, where our capacity was insufficient, where a system behaved differently from what we expected, or where the consequences of our actions exceeded our intentions.

That does not render failure harmless. Nor does it remove accountability for what happened. It simply changes our relationship with what failure can reveal.

What would happen if discovering we had caused harm did not default to a decision about whether I was a good or a bad person?

What if I stayed with what happened for a little longer?

What if I allowed another person’s experience to tell me something about the consequences of my actions without making my intention irrelevant?

What if I acknowledged my intention without using it to erase the impact?

What if I remained curious about the parts of myself I would rather not face?

I think this is where another capacity begins to matter, one I had not previously connected so strongly with consideration: compassion and other forms of kindness. I have often associated compassion with how we respond to other people. It’s becoming clear that we also need sufficient self-compassion to encounter ourselves truthfully. Not niceness. Not indulgence. Not an escape from responsibility. Something closer to the ability to remain in relationship with ourselves when the reality we encounter is disappointing.

Shame does something peculiar to our gaze. It can make what we have done seem so enormous that it becomes the only thing we can see. Instead of I did something harmful, the story becomes I am harmful. Instead of opening us to responsibility, that collapse can make responsibility seem impossible. We defend, disappear, blame, counterattack, or become so consumed by our own distress that the person who was harmed somehow ends up caring for us.

Dr Kristin Neff’s work on self-compassion offers something useful here. By practising kindness towards ourselves while embracing the realities around us, including our own, we create space to approach shortcomings with a healthier optimism rather than becoming caught in patterns of negativity, fear and isolation. Perhaps this also leaves us less compelled to defend ourselves or to displace blame. During times of difficulty, self-compassion might allow us to recognise: Yes, I did this. It’s important and matters. There may be something here I need to understand. And I am still capable of choosing what I do next.

Perhaps that is why I am interested in our capacity to recognise misalignment, learn from it, and find our way back to renewed practice. We will get things wrong. We will sometimes behave in ways that contradict what we say we value. We will fail to see people, protect things that should be questioned, and participate in systems whose consequences exceed our awareness. If humaneness depends on never falling short, I am not sure any of us has much hope.

The more useful questions may concern what happens when things become visible.

Can we turn towards what has been revealed rather than away from it?

Can we repair what can be repaired?

Can we allow the encounter to change how we participate next time?

And can the people and systems around us make such a return possible?

That last question matters because this is not only an individual struggle. Organisations also construct identities. We are an inclusive organisation. We care about our people. We value openness. We are committed to equity. These stories can express genuine aspiration and practice. But they can also make it remarkably difficult to receive contradictory information.

What happens when an employee’s experience does not align with the organisation’s self-understanding?

Does that experience become information?

Or does the person become the problem?

The more an organisation needs its values to describe what it already is, rather than what it is continually striving to become, the more threatening contrary experience becomes. It may be easier to question the person, isolate the incident, or explain why the experience is not representative than to allow what happened to disturb the story.

Perhaps this is why our relationship with failure tells us so much about a system. Not because humane systems do not fail, but because failure reveals whether the system can learn from realities it did not want to face.

This may be true of us too.

Making room for more reality is easy to admire in theory. The real challenge comes when some of that reality implicates us.

Can I remain open when what I discover about myself is unflattering?

Can I hold the discomfort of contradiction without rushing to resolve it?

Can I allow what I encounter to broaden my understanding of myself rather than threaten it?

Perhaps consideration requires this kind of grace. Not the kind that lets us off the hook, but the kind that allows us to remain on it long enough to learn.

The alternative is rather limiting. If I can only consider realities in which I remain innocent, I will eventually have to stop seeing. And I suspect that what we are unwilling to see in ourselves will eventually become something other people must carry for us.

While travelling, I occasionally dine out alone, bringing a book to read as I enjoy a cup of tea after dinner. On one such evening, my solitude was interrupted by a spirited conversation at a large table nearby. As hard as I tried, I could not help but overhear the discussion, and at one point someone shared an experience that challenged the direction the group had been heading. They had barely finished speaking before another person responded, “I understand what you’re saying, but...” Nothing about the exchange was particularly confrontational. The response was polite, the conversation continued, and I doubt anyone else gave the moment much thought.

I did.

Something had shifted almost imperceptibly. What the person had offered was acknowledged, but not really considered. Within moments, the group returned to the ideas they had already been discussing, almost as though the interruption had never happened. I remember wondering what might have emerged if they had lingered a little longer with that interruption.

It was a different reality entering the same conversation. Nothing about the experience the person shared necessarily invalidated what everyone else believed. It simply complicated matters. For a moment, something had entered the conversation that did not sit easily with the direction it was already travelling, and rather than allowing that new information to affect the conversation, the group absorbed the interruption and continued.

I have thought about that exchange many times since, partly because I recognise the same tendency in myself. Someone says something that unsettles an assumption I hold, and as they speak, I can feel my mind beginning to organise a response. I may be preparing to explain, contextualise, question or defend, believing I am participating thoughtfully. Yet sometimes I am no longer listening to understand what is being offered. I am listening to see where it fits within what I already know. What always brings me back to listening is this question: What if there is more to see?

Perhaps this is one of the difficulties of being human, living with other humans. We can only encounter the world from where we stand, yet it is remarkably easy to mistake what we can see from there for the whole landscape.

Our experiences give us access to parts of reality. Our relationships expose us to others. Communities carry histories, knowledge and experiences that no individual can possess alone. Even within ourselves, there are motivations, fears, contradictions and assumptions we may not readily recognise until something brings them into view.

We default to seeking ways to make sense of it all. Our beliefs, values, experiences and knowledge help us navigate a world far too complex to reconsider from the beginning every morning. Certainty can give us somewhere solid to stand, particularly when circumstances feel unstable or when decisions need to be made.

There is nothing inherently wrong with certainty. We need convictions to orient ourselves, principles that help us determine what we are willing or unwilling to accept, and enough confidence in what we know to act when action is required. There are also circumstances in which continued uncertainty becomes a form of avoidance, particularly when people are experiencing harm. But certainty can also narrow the amount of reality we are willing to encounter.

Once we become certain about another person’s motives, there is less left to discover about them. Once we become certain about why a community behaves as it does, experiences that complicate that explanation become easier to dismiss. Once an organisation becomes certain about the nature of a problem, it can become remarkably efficient at finding evidence for its solution while overlooking what does not fit.

The same happens with how we see ourselves. We hold stories about who we are, what we value and how we behave. Then an interaction, a mistake or an unexpected response from another person reveals something about us that does not sit comfortably within that story. We can examine what has appeared, or quickly find a reason why it does not really belong.

In each case, reality has not necessarily changed. Our opportunity to perceive more of it has.

This matters because many of the challenges we face together are complex enough that no single person, discipline, institution or worldview can see everything that needs to be seen. What seems sensible from one position can have consequences that become visible only from another. A policy experienced as efficient by those administering it may feel impenetrable to those trying to access it. A decision that seems reasonable within an organisation may have effects on a community that were never present in the room where it was made. Even our attempts to address injustice can contain assumptions worth examining.

Perhaps this is why consideration has become increasingly important to me, even as I continue to explore what the term needs to encompass. I do not mean politeness, endless curiosity, or an obligation to treat every explanation as equally credible. Consideration requires discernment. Nor does it mean abandoning what we believe every time someone disagrees with us.

I mean something more intentional: a willingness to allow what we encounter to undergo genuine examination before deciding we already understand what it means.

That is harder than it sounds because consideration creates the possibility of being changed. We may discover that what we know is incomplete. We may have to acknowledge something about our own participation that we would rather place elsewhere. We may encounter a person’s experience and still disagree with their interpretation of it, while recognising something we could not see before listening to them. Sometimes greater examination strengthens our convictions. Sometimes it asks us to revise them.

The point is not to become less certain about everything. It is to become more aware of what our certainty prevents us from considering.

This feels particularly important when questions of justice and human suffering are at stake. Laws, policies, traditions and institutions are necessary ways of organising collective life, but none can anticipate every human circumstance. Our beliefs and narratives can help us recognise injustice, while also carrying assumptions inherited from the systems and cultures that formed us. If our commitment to any of them becomes so fixed that another person’s lived reality can no longer reach us, we may protect our certainty at the expense of the very human flourishing we hoped it would serve.

Perhaps the challenge, particularly in uncertain and complex times, is learning to hold conviction without letting it close our capacity for consideration. There will always be moments when we have to decide and act with incomplete information, because we cannot remain indefinitely suspended in examination. But there is often a small space before certainty hardens, before the familiar explanation takes over, and before another person becomes simply an example of something we already believe.

Imagine what becomes possible when we learn to remain in that space a little longer, allowing ourselves to perceive and relate to more of reality before grasping for certainty. Not because every belief needs to be surrendered, but because some things deserve contemplation before we decide we already understand them. Without consciously examining our certainties, we may never discover what we do not know.

Perhaps our capacity to respond humanely grows with our willingness to remain in relationship with more of the reality we share, including the parts that complicate what we already think we know.

Several years ago, I attended a gathering where people had come together to discuss an issue that mattered deeply to them. There was genuine commitment in the room. People had given up their evening because they cared about their community and wanted to make a positive difference.

The conversation was thoughtful and respectful. Ideas flowed easily, energy was high, and many people had the opportunity to contribute. By most measures, it was a successful meeting. Yet as I went home that evening, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.

The meeting had produced useful ideas. But as I replayed the conversation, I realised that we had spoken at length about the community we wanted, yet had spent almost no time practising it.

Some people had spoken more than others. A few difficult questions had been brushed aside. At times, uncertainty entered the room, and we responded by grasping for familiar answers.

• We wanted participation, yet we were still directing.

• We wanted honesty, yet we were careful to avoid disagreement.

• We wanted belonging, yet some experiences remained on the edges of the conversation.

We had focused almost entirely on the outcome we wanted. I realised we had unconsciously separated our destination from the way we travelled. None of this stemmed from bad intentions. It stemmed from habit.

Like many people, I grew up believing the end goal mattered most. If the outcome was good enough, the path we took to get there seemed almost secondary. We measured success by what we achieved rather than by who we became along the way.

It is easy to overlook how we are trying to create change when our attention is fixed on what we hope to achieve: a stronger organisation, a fairer policy, a healthier community, or a more just society.

Those goals matter, but so does the way we pursue them. Every process already embodies a way of living together.

The Work Is Also Working on Us

We often approach change as something we do to a situation.

We identify a problem. We bring people together. We design a response. We try to move the system from where it is to where we believe it should be.

I still believe in the necessity of that work. But I have become increasingly aware that the work is also shaping us as we try to do something through it. Every difficult conversation, meeting and conflict shapes us. Every experience of leadership, exclusion, responsibility or uncertainty shapes us as well.

The systems we inhabit are not merely structures around us. They become patterns within us. They teach us what to notice, what to ignore, whom to trust, and whose knowledge counts. They also teach us what must be protected and what may change.

We are not merely passive recipients of that formation. We are shaped by the systems we inhabit, and through our participation, we continually shape them in turn. Every time we choose urgency over relationship, certainty over examination, or control over contribution, we help produce a particular way of living together.

But every time we make room for a neglected voice, question an inherited assumption, repair a damaged relationship, or share power more honestly, we strengthen another possibility.

The Outcome Starts In The Formation

It is tempting to imagine the process is separate from the outcome. We tell ourselves that once the right policy is in place, the strategy is agreed, and the immediate problem has been solved, we will have more time to build trust, share power, or listen more deeply.

We set these things aside to move quickly, to enable a decision, or to avoid what feels like a distraction: disagreement, inconvenient timing, missing context, or uncertainty. Sometimes urgency is real. But temporary ways of working tend to become permanent.

The practices we repeatedly use do more than help us reach an outcome. They shape what becomes normal. So what are we practising when we say we want belonging yet avoid disagreement? When we want trust yet leave no room for vulnerability? When we want participation yet preserve control over every meaningful decision? When we want justice yet treat people as obstacles to overcome?

The contradiction does not disappear simply because our intentions are good. The outcome is already being shaped by how we meet, decide, disagree and act throughout the process.

The Future Is Something We Practise

Most people I meet genuinely want to make things better. The more difficult question is whether our habits help us create the future we imagine or quietly reproduce the patterns we hope to leave behind. Every decision leaves its mark not only on the outcome but also on us.

Perhaps this is why small interactions matter more than they appear.

• A meeting is not merely a meeting. It is a place where people learn whether their contribution matters.

• A disagreement is not merely a disagreement. It is a place where we learn whether difference prompts examination, withdrawal, or attack.

• A decision is not merely a decision. It reveals whose knowledge carries weight and whose life will bear the consequences.

A process is never merely a means to an end. It already shapes culture. Every interaction and decision expands—or shrinks—our ability to build what we hope for. That may matter more than we realise.

It begins with the ordinary choices we make about how we meet one another: whether we remain curious when we disagree, protect another person’s dignity even when it would be easier to dismiss them, choose compassion even when it asks something of us, and continue to recognise the humanity of those we struggle to understand.

We cannot always choose the circumstances we enter, but we can cultivate our capacity to choose how we participate in them.

The way we change things changes everything. While we are busy shaping the future, it is quietly shaping us.

And the people we become together may be the most important change of all.

When I relocated to the Netherlands, I had the opportunity to design and work on a programme in a rapidly gentrifying, multicultural community with a mix of cultures, languages and perspectives—one of the projects involved engaging in conversations about the future of the neighbourhood.

The participants cared deeply about the place they lived and genuinely intended to work towards a hope-filled future. They expressed a shared desire for safety, respect, relationships and a deeper sense of belonging. As I asked them to dream about what could be, I noticed something intriguing.

Almost every contribution began with what people wanted to stop.

“We need to stop...”

“We can’t keep...”

“I’m tired of...”

Everything they said was understandable, and much of it was true. Even positive ambitions were met with the need for change before they could become reality. As I tried to harvest what people shared, I realised we had become remarkably skilled at describing the future we didn’t want.

I deliberately shifted the narrative by posing a hypothetical question—”If this community became everything you hoped it could be, what would it feel like to live here?” The room fell silent; people looked around or down at their feet. Something different was happening within them.

The silence wasn’t because they did not care; it fell because imagining a different future required a different kind of attention and thinking that comes naturally with criticism.

Modern Westernised society has honed our ability to identify what is broken, become adept at spotting problems, exposing contradictions, and analysing systems that no longer serve us. These are valuable skills that help us understand reality more honestly.

But understanding what we don’t want is not the same as recognising what we are trying to create. That paradigm asks something different of us. We need to stretch our capacity to imagine. Not some idealised fantasy or a rescue mission, but our imagination rooted in relationship with reality. The kind that begins to notice possibilities that already exist in small ways to build on.

• A neighbour who knows everyone’s name.

• A local initiative quietly transforming lives.

• Children who instinctively include someone standing at the edge of the group.

• A conversation that leaves people more connected than they were when it began.

Imagination can grow not only by inventing something entirely new but also by recognising the rich seeds and seedlings already present.

In my experience of working with communities, I notice that people often underestimate their capacity to imagine together. Our inherited systems of consumerism encourage us to adopt someone else’s vision rather than to participate in creating our own, even though every meaningful change has been sparked by someone’s imagination.

Think about it. Before every new invention, initiative, and innovation, even a different way of relating to one another had never existed in the world. Someone had to become curious enough to ask, “What if?”

We cannot imagine possibilities we have never learned to notice, and we struggle to build futures we cannot yet picture. This is why practices of attention matter so much.

The participant who once asked me how to stay open without becoming overwhelmed offered another gift, unaware of it. They reminded me that openness is not simply about being willing to see what is difficult; it also means staying available to what is possible. Maybe that is what makes imagination so magical. It does not try to escape reality; it accepts and loves reality enough to believe it can become something more.

When we look at our world’s beauty and pain, before we ask what needs fixing, we might spend a little longer pondering and imagining. What if we sat with and held questions such as:

What kind of world could we boldly practise into being?

Several years ago, I was facilitating a group through an exercise in which we walked slowly around an outdoor space in silence. The invitation was simple and general: be aware, notice and pay attention. When we came back together, I asked the group, “What did you notice?”

We had all walked through exactly the same space, yet the answers were remarkably different. We had inhabited completely different worlds. One person described the birds, another focused on the cracks in the pavement, someone else expressed discomfort at being watched while walking, and one participant barely noticed the surroundings at all, having spent the entire exercise thinking about work.

Situations like this always challenge my assumptions about seeing the world as it is, because I often notice what I have practised noticing. It makes me wonder how much of our experience is shaped by where our attention naturally settles.

• If I spend every day looking for what is broken, I become exceptionally good at spotting it.

• If I constantly scan for threats, I become increasingly convinced the world is dangerous.

• If I notice only what confirms my existing beliefs, they begin to feel like objective reality.

  

This is not due to dishonesty; it happens because our attention is never neutral. What we pay attention to teaches us what is important. The challenge is that attention also becomes a habit, and we stop choosing where to focus. It starts choosing for us. This might be one reason why changing each other’s minds, or our own, can be difficult.

Each of us has practised seeing the world differently, which goes beyond merely holding different opinions. Over time, our attention carves familiar pathways. Certain stories become easier to recognise than others. Certain people become easier to understand. Certain possibilities disappear from view altogether.

This is why I have become increasingly interested in practices rather than simply ideas, because practices interrupt habit and invite us to notice something we may have walked past a hundred times. Although we may feel it suddenly appeared, it was our attention that finally arrived.

Looking back over this series, many of the questions that have surfaced have really been about attention.

What do we notice?
What do we avoid?
What do we grow numb to?
What remains worthy of our gratitude?
Where do we situate ourselves in the story?

Perhaps changing the world sometimes begins with practising to see differently and allowing it to change us.

Not because the world has changed, but because we have.

At one point in my work, I became curious about how systems worked. I wanted to understand why communities struggled to achieve lasting change, why organisations repeated patterns they desperately wanted to escape, and why well-intentioned people often found themselves contributing to the very outcomes they opposed.

The more I learned, the more I found myself looking outward. I analysed structures, institutions, policies and cultures. It was fascinating work and, in many ways, necessary. One day, I overheard a conversation among colleagues about an upcoming election. Someone said, in frustration, “I wish people would just change!” Hearing those words made my heart skip a beat, and a cold, crushing reality sank in.

Though I have heard those words many times before, even thought them, they landed differently that day.

Who were the “people” who were supposed to change?

Who exactly were they imagining? Was it politicians, corporate leaders, neighbours, family, friends, or foes? Or, as a catch-all, was it anyone and everyone who disagreed with a particular way of thinking?

That question was bringing something uncomfortable to light. Whenever I spoke about systems, I often imagined myself standing just outside them, observing how they worked. I could identify the patterns, describe the dynamics, and help others understand them. I somehow came to believe that knowing more about systems protected me from being shaped by them, let alone from participating in them.

That illusion of separateness is surprisingly easy to sustain. We talk about consumerism while consuming; criticise polarisation while growing impatient with those who see the world differently; lament loneliness while postponing conversations with the people we care about; and speak about disconnected communities while forgetting that communities are not abstract ideas. Communities are made up of ordinary people like you and me.

This realisation was not particularly comfortable, but it did not bring guilt; it brought a sense of connection and hope. If I participate in these systems, perhaps I also help to change them with others.

One person cannot transform them alone. Systems are not separate from relationships, as they are a network of relationships. When those relationships are repeated often enough, they become normative, making meaningful change feel slower than we would like.

We look for solutions “out there” while overlooking the quieter places where systems are continually recreated—in conversations, assumptions, habits, workplaces, families, and communities—the foundations for forming and maintaining the core beliefs that uphold the system. Understanding this reality doesn’t undermine structural change; it reminds us that structures and relationships continually shape each other.

The participant who asked me how to stay open without becoming overwhelmed was carrying more than emotional weight. They were also carrying a quiet assumption many of us inherit—that the world’s problems lie beyond us, awaiting someone else to solve them.

That very assumption might be part of what makes us feel so powerless. If change is only possible via something “out there” by “others”, then we can only wait for them to do the work.

If we shift our perspective slightly, we might realise that our role in driving change is often overlooked. If we are already part of the systems we hope to change, our relationships, conversations, choices and communities matter greatly.

From this vantage point, could we see ourselves as participants rather than observers, not as a burden but as an act of agency?

One who can accept that the world will not change overnight. Quietly determined to recognise that we have never truly been separate from one another and that we don’t have to face this alone.

In my younger days, I noticed a recurring pattern, almost predictable. When conversations become particularly heavy—whether they centre on ecological uncertainty, social division, or the future people fear for their children—someone almost always apologetically changes the subject.

“I know this sounds silly after everything we’ve been talking about,” they would say, “but I noticed the jacarandas are flowering.” Or they would mention a bird they had seen that morning. A grandchild learning to walk. The smell of rain after weeks of dry weather. The delicious bread shared around a table. Laughter that arrived unexpectedly. And it annoyed me.

My first instinct was to categorise each one as a strategy to escape the conversation. But over time, I wondered whether some were doing something entirely different from what I assumed. Some expressed genuine warmth; they seemed to remember what made the conversation worth having in the first place.

I realised that I had misunderstood and overlooked gratitude.

I used to associate it with faux positivity at best. Worse, it felt like pretending everything was okay when it clearly wasn’t. It often felt like an invitation to look away from suffering rather than towards it.

The more I worked alongside people living difficult realities, the less convincing my assumptions became. I observed people deeply engaged with the world’s challenges, refusing to ignore suffering. Somehow, they managed to stay connected to what they loved.

That’s the distinction that mattered.

Focusing solely on what is broken eventually turns the world into a catalogue of problems that demand solutions. We begin to relate to life primarily through what is absent, threatened, or failing.

Remaining connected to what nourishes us—people, places, beauty, community, wonder—reminds us that our care has roots. It creates space to protect what we have come to love, rather than merely what we understand.

Perhaps this is why gratitude feels so different from optimism. Optimism asks whether things will turn out well. Gratitude asks whether we can still recognise what is precious, even when things seem bleak.

• It does not deny grief. It gives grief a place to belong.

• It does not erase fear. It reminds us what fear is trying to protect.

• It does not remove uncertainty. It helps us remember why staying present matters.

The participant who asked me how I stay open without becoming overwhelmed posed a question that has stayed with me. Perhaps this is part of the answer I wish I had given.

I can’t stay open by trying to carry everything. I stay open by returning, again and again, to what I love and savouring it wholeheartedly. Gratitude reminds me why they matter, even as I face the world’s difficulties, which refuse to disappear.

I’ve learned that gratitude rarely follows hope. It is often the practice that invites hope to take root.

Perhaps before we ask what the world needs from us, it is worth asking a richer question.

A participant contacted me after a workshop. We had spent several hours exploring uncertainty, the challenges shaping our communities, and the emotional weight many people carry as they try to make sense of what is happening around them.

“How do you do it?” they asked. I got curious about what was underneath the question, hoping to gain some insight into what they meant. I asked them to explain. Slowly, they worked their way through a few possible explanations, trying to find the right words. Then, after a brief pause, the real question landed.

“How do you stay open to all of this without becoming overwhelmed?”

The question lingered long after the conversation ended because I recognised myself in it. I remember thinking the honest answer was more unsettling than the one they were hoping for, because I don’t think I always do. Some days I stay open; other days I don’t.

There are days when I avoid reading the news, others when I feel emotionally depleted by conversations that feel unproductive, and sometimes the complexity of what is happening around us feels far larger than anything I can meaningfully influence. I suspect I am not alone. Most of us move between attention and avoidance, concern and fatigue, openness and retreat—sometimes within the same day.

Over the course of this series, we have explored awareness, numbness, fear, grief, and the ways human beings struggle to hold realities that feel bigger than themselves. What has become increasingly apparent is that many people are wrestling with the same underlying question.

How do we remain open to what is happening without becoming consumed by it?

In many of the spaces I inhabit, resilience is often offered as part of the answer. The suggestion is that we can become stronger, more disciplined, and more capable of carrying difficult realities. While there is value in that framing, I have increasingly found myself wondering if something important is missing.

As I sat with that question, I found myself reflecting on the people who have most influenced my life. They are not necessarily those who can tolerate the greatest amount of difficulty. They are often the people who remain connected in the midst of it. They have the capacity to continually show up, care, and build relationships. More importantly, they continue to find reasons to laugh, create, gather, and contribute even when circumstances remain uncertain. What strikes me is that they rarely seem to be carrying the weight alone or in isolation.

Many of us have inherited a deeply individualistic understanding of strength. We celebrate self-sufficiency and independence. We admire people who appear capable of handling everything themselves. Yet much of human history tells a different story.

Communities survived hardship together. Grief was shared. Responsibility was distributed. Meaning was created collectively. People carried one another through periods that no individual could have navigated alone.

Perhaps what we often label resilience is actually more about relationships: with ourselves, one another, with place, purpose, and something larger than our individual concerns. These are relationships grounded in reality, not absent of struggle, not emotional invulnerability or Pollyanna optimism. When those relationships weaken, the world can begin to feel unbearably heavy. Everything becomes ours to carry. Every problem feels personal. Every uncertainty feels isolating.

When those relationships strengthen, something shifts. Challenges, grief and complexity don’t dissipate, but our relationship to them changes because we are not standing alone before them.

I suspect that staying open is less about developing the capacity to hold more and more of the world’s suffering. Perhaps it is something we practise rather than achieve. It may be more about learning how to remain connected while holding what is already here—connected to one another and to the possibility that, even in difficult times, human beings are capable of creating meaning together.

Perhaps that is what staying open looks like: returning to one another again and again, persistently and imperfectly, especially when closing down would feel easier.

A few years ago, I found myself unexpectedly emotional while watching a documentary. The scene itself was not particularly dramatic. There were no shocking images or tragic revelations. Yet as I watched, a heaviness rose that felt larger than what was unfolding on the screen.

What surprised me most was that I could not easily explain it. The feeling did not belong entirely to the documentary, nor to me. For a while, I struggled to find words for what I was experiencing, but I knew I was longing for something I could not quite pinpoint.

At the time, I kept trying to identify exactly what I was grieving. Was it something from my own life? Something from the documentary? Something I had lost and not yet acknowledged? The more I searched for a clear answer, the more elusive it became. What remained was the feeling itself—a quiet ache that seemed connected to something larger than any single event.

Most of us are taught to associate grief with an individual loss: a death, a relationship, a beloved job, or a home. Something identifiable that one could point to and name. But we rarely delve into the type of grief that does not fit neatly into tangible categories. The grief I was experiencing tends to emerge when something important is changing, disappearing, or becoming uncertain. It’s a grief that can be personal, collective, or something in between.

Every generation carries concerns about the future. Yet some concerns feel increasingly difficult to ignore—political fragmentation, rising loneliness, the erosion of trust in institutions and communities, and ecological instability. Even where these challenges have not yet fully arrived, many people already feel the losses they imply.

Grief can begin before something is gone, as it can emerge when we recognise what is at risk. With no clear event or ritual, such as a funeral, for society to gather around, pause and acknowledge the experience, complicated emotional responses arise. Because they are carried quietly, they can be expressed as anxiety, fatigue or a lingering sadness that is hard to explain.

With no widely accepted language for these experiences, many people assume something is wrong with them.

But imagine that grief is not always evidence that something has gone wrong. What if it were evidence of connection because we care and belong to something larger than ourselves?

In reality, our individualistic lives are intertwined with people, places, communities, and futures, and we grieve because we recognise the connection or lack thereof. The challenge may be learning how to carry grief together.

I often find that what we hold collectively often becomes more bearable than when it is carried alone.

If that is true, then what people describe as anxiety, numbness, or exhaustion may not be a simple individual condition. Maybe it is grief searching for language, community, and a place to belong.

I once had a Human Design facilitator warn that genuine transformation never occurs by focusing on predicted results, starting points, or end points. The true worth lies in the process itself, as it uncovers the hidden qualities of the dialogue and the associations that influence the viability of an emergent outcome. Sometimes, the best place to arrive is far from the intended goal; often, that goal is merely a crossroads on the journey to where you genuinely want to go.

I have returned to that insight many times over the years. The more experience I gain, the more I realise that clarity often operates in similar ways. We tend to treat it as a destination—a place we arrive once we have enough information or understanding. Yet clarity is rarely an endpoint. More often, it is a stage in an ongoing process of discovery, one that changes both the questions we ask and our relationship to the answers we find.

Many people assume that being able to see clearly is the ultimate goal. We celebrate awareness, encourage learning, and speak of truth as though once it is discovered, the path forward naturally reveals itself.

Seeing clearly is not simply about gaining information. It is about encountering realities that may challenge how we understand ourselves, our communities, and the world around us. That can be uncomfortable, destabilising, and at times feel like a loss because clarity comes with a cost.

Sometimes what becomes visible is not a hidden truth “out there,” but something much closer to home. A pattern we participate in. An assumption we inherited. A belief that once felt certain but now appears incomplete. The more honestly we look, the harder it becomes to maintain simple stories.

Problems that once seemed to have obvious causes begin revealing deeper layers of complexity. The people we once viewed as opposition begin appearing more human. The systems we criticised from a distance reveal how deeply interconnected we are with them.

Clarity invites us to question the certainties we build to protect our sense of security.

When the world feels unstable, certainty can create the illusion of solid ground. It allows us to quickly identify who is right, who is wrong, and what should happen next. Seeing clearly often disrupts that comfort.

Complexity can feel distressing because it rarely provides immediate relief. It invites us to sit with tensions that do not resolve neatly while trying to hold multiple truths at once. It reminds us that most meaningful human challenges cannot be reduced to simple answers.

This is one reason why genuine awareness can feel exhausting, although not always difficult. Understanding often requires us to loosen our attachment to familiar explanations, remain present, and continue listening. It asks us to stay curious beyond facts and figures, leaning into process and understanding when certainty, withdrawal, and defensiveness would be easier.

And perhaps most challenging of all, it asks us to acknowledge that we are not separate from the systems we critique. We not only participate in them, but also influence them and are influenced by them.

That recognition can feel heavy at times. Yet within that burden of relatedness, possibilities can begin to take shape through the power of connection. If we are connected to the systems around us, then we are not powerless in our relationship to them. We can discover not only our participation in those systems, but also our capacity to engage and contribute differently.

This is not easy. It requires a willingness to remain in relationship with reality and all its layers of complexity rather than retreating into simpler narratives that offer temporary comfort.

What if we shifted our understanding of clarity from a loss of certainty to an exchange—trading simplicity for the capacity to hold greater complexity? What if we recognised that complexity, despite its challenges, offers us something far more valuable than the comfort of easy answers?

Emerging in place of certainty are humility, connection, and responsibility, along with the ability to operationalise them in response to the world as it is, rather than as we wish it to be.

Human beings have always had a complicated relationship with fear, especially the kind that feels too large, too uncertain, or too unresolved to hold with any ease.

When fear is not fully processed—when it becomes entangled with grief, instability, loss, or rapid change—it rarely stays still. Something in us begins to narrow. Our field of attention contracts, our tolerance for complexity weakens, and before long, what once felt difficult to understand starts to feel unbearable. In that state, we often begin searching urgently for something simple, something clear, something or someone to blame.

Sometimes this takes the form of outrage. Sometimes it hardens into ideology. Sometimes it appears as moral certainty. And sometimes, more disturbingly, it leads us toward becoming the very thing we imagine we are resisting.

Fear itself is not the enemy. In many situations, it serves an essential purpose: it alerts us to our discomfort, warns us of danger, sharpens awareness, helps us assess risk, and can move us to act when action is needed. The difficulty begins when fear grows beyond our capacity to understand or contain it. When that happens, it often begins seeking simplicity, idealised perfection, and superiority.

Complex problems are reduced to the fault of a particular group. Uncertainty is recast as a battle between right and wrong. Discomfort becomes evidence that someone else must be responsible for what we are experiencing. What is complicated becomes moralised. What is painful becomes externalised.

This pattern is not confined to any one place, ideology, or moment in history. It appears across cultures and political movements, on the left and the right, among the religious and the secular, within organisations, communities, families, and nations. The language changes. The symbols change. The justifications change. But the underlying pattern remains remarkably consistent.

When people feel threatened, they often become more attached to certainty, more protective of identity, and more suspicious of difference. Their world divides into those who belong and those who do not, those who are safe and those who are dangerous, those who are righteous and those who are beyond redemption. Some begin chasing a standard of purity or perfection that cannot tolerate difference without interpreting it as inferiority.

At first, this can feel reassuring. A clear enemy offers something uncertainty cannot: direction. Blame explains, and explanation can bring relief and exoneration. For a moment, relief can feel almost indistinguishable from truth. But relief and truth are not always the same thing.

Fear rarely disappears when it is projected outward. More often, it simply changes shape. The group we blame may shift. The story we tell may evolve. The language may become more sophisticated, more intellectual, or more morally refined. Yet the underlying anxiety remains untouched. Long-standing, unexamined fear can fester in troubling ways: addiction, isolation, or the gradual mirroring of the very behaviours and attitudes once opposed.

The desire to protect becomes control. The pursuit of justice becomes punishment. The need for safety becomes exclusion. The fight against dehumanisation begins, quietly and convincingly, to dehumanise others.

This is one of the more unsettling realities of being human: under enough pressure, many of us are capable of becoming what we most fear. Not necessarily because we are cruel or malicious, but because unresolved fear changes how we see. It narrows our vision. It reduces our capacity for curiosity. It makes complexity feel dangerous, and certainty feel like salvation. It convinces us that our survival depends on drawing sharper lines between ourselves and others.

Perhaps this helps explain some of the fragmentation unfolding around us now. As social, economic, ecological, and political pressures intensify, many people are finding it harder to live with the insistence of uncertainty. And as that strain grows, so too does the temptation to retreat into simple stories, clear villains, and forms of moral certainty that promise pseudo-perfection and clarity at the cost of depth.

But perhaps there is another possibility. What if fear does not require someone or something to blame? What if, instead, it is asking something more difficult and more honest of us? What if it is inviting us to look carefully at what feels threatened within ourselves, within our communities, and within the systems we depend on?

That invitation is not an easy one. It asks us to resist the comfort of easy answers. It asks us to remain curious and suspend our demand for certainty, no matter how seductive certainty feels. It asks us to stay in relationship when separation feels safer and easier. It asks us to build bridges rather than learn how to defeat our enemies. And perhaps most difficult of all, it asks us to recognise that the line between “us” and “them” is often far more fragile than we would like to believe.

Maybe one of humanity’s deepest challenges is to remain humane and curious in the presence of fear.

We, humans, are remarkably capable of care. We care for partners, children, friends, neighbours and ecosystems of connection that shape our daily lives. We instinctively respond to visible suffering when it is close enough to touch, hear or recognise ourselves in it. But as the scale expands beyond our comfort zone, things break down.

A single story can move people deeply. Throw in statistics involving thousands, and we struggle to sustain any emotional weight for more than a moment. We can grieve one visible loss and yet feel strangely detached when confronted with suffering at the scale of systems, nations or planetary crisis, as we are increasingly exposed to global instability, ecological collapse, war, displacement and social fragmentation.

It is tempting to interpret this as hypocrisy or indifference. This contradiction feels uncomfortable; many people genuinely want to care about these realities but find themselves emotionally overwhelmed, detached or inconsistent in their engagement. But perhaps part of the difficulty lies elsewhere.

Human beings evolved within relatively small relational environments. Our nervous systems were shaped around direct community, visible consequences and immediate interpersonal dynamics. Now, we are attempting to emotionally process problems that operate across enormous scales of geography, time and complexity. This creates tension between what we can intellectually understand and what we can emotionally support.

Most people can intellectually grasp various levels of instability or systemic inequality as a concept. But intellectually understanding something is not the same as relating to it. The scale itself can create psychological dissonance. When problems feel too large, responsibility becomes difficult to locate. Over time, individual action can feel insignificant in comparison to the magnitude of the issue.

And when people feel powerless, emotional withdrawal creeps in gradually and perilously.

As modern discourse oscillates between outrage and disengagement, we move between intense emotional activation and exhaustion, lacking the capacity to translate large-scale awareness into grounded collective action. Without meaningful pathways for participation, care itself can begin to collapse under the weight of abstraction.

Modern life complicates this further, as society systematically grooms people towards states of constant urgency, competition and self-preservation. Even so, we are simultaneously expected to care about collective well-being on a planetary scale. This opposition shapes behaviour more than many realise.

And yet, despite all this, people still reach towards one another. Communities still organise during crises. Strangers still help one another after a disaster. Something within human beings continues to move towards relationship and shared survival, even within systems that often fragment connection—this level of beauty and persistence matters.

Perhaps it could motivate us to collectively navigate towards what helps people reconnect information about large-scale realities to lived relationships, shared meaning and collective participation. It could allow care to deepen as people begin to locate themselves within relationships rather than simply within information, because this is not about an ability to care at scale.

The profound emerging question is whether modern life has given us the structures, practices and relationships necessary to hold that care together.

A strange contradiction is emerging in modern life.

If you inhabit the Global North, many people are more informed than ever before. Yet, despite this constant exposure, many feel strangely disconnected from what they see.

We live in a time when people can witness real-time injustice, corruption, exploitation, burnout, loneliness, polarisation, and grief as they flow endlessly across our screens and attention each day. Awareness itself is no longer rare.

This detachment from relentless exposure may not stem from a lack of caring. The chasm grows over time as our ability to remain emotionally engaged depletes under sustained exposure without meaningful processing or action.

At first, awareness can feel energising. Seeing clearly can create the sense that change is possible and perhaps even inevitable. But over time, when awareness repeatedly encounters systems that appear immovable or problems that seem too large to meaningfully influence, something else can begin to emerge beneath the surface. Not always dramatic or obvious. Often it appears subtly.

A quiet numbness.

People scroll past things that once deeply affected them. Stories that may once have caused outrage or grief become part of the daily landscape of information. Concern becomes fatigued. Attention becomes fragmented. The nervous system begins adapting to constant stimulation and unresolved tension.

Maybe we are attempting to carry more emotional and psychological weight than human beings were ever designed to process alone and continuously. If so, perhaps what appears as apathy is sometimes cognitive and emotional enervation.

Modern society encourages constant awareness but offers few structures that help people metabolise what they are absorbing. We are expected to continue functioning, producing, and performing normally while being exposed to immense levels of unresolved collective distress and instability. Staying informed about what is happening in the world while simultaneously feeling less capable of responding meaningfully to it creates a difficult incongruity.

When that hyperawareness has nowhere to go, protective patterns often emerge. Some people withdraw emotionally. Others become cynical. Some intellectualise everything they feel, while others distract themselves to avoid feeling too much at all.

Sometimes, numbness is not the absence of care but the consequence of prolonged, unresolved attentiveness.

Historically, grief, uncertainty, and collective fear were often processed within communities, rituals, spiritual practices, and shared spaces of reflection. As many societies become increasingly individualistic and siloed, people now process these experiences internally and in isolation while trying to maintain the appearance that everything is manageable. This changes how people relate to themselves, to one another, and to the world around them. That is not a small shift.

Simplicity might reduce this to an examination of how we optimise our information exposure, but complexity points towards something deeper. Awareness alone was never meant to sustain us. Perhaps the deeper question emerging is what allows human beings to remain open and emotionally connected without becoming overwhelmed.

Human beings need connection, reflection, community, and meaningful pathways for action. Without those structures and practices, many try substituting endless exposure for meaningful engagement, and that kind of awareness can slowly collapse inward on itself.

The answer is not to stop paying attention, because aspects of our continued well-being and development depend upon a degree of awareness. But there may be another way of relating to what we see. One that allows awareness to deepen connection rather than produce paralysis. One that creates space not only to witness the world differently, but to remain human within it.

Maybe we begin by recognising numbness as something more complex, with varied points of origin, including what happens when feelings have nowhere safe to go.

We are more aware than ever before. In Global North Western society, people receive more information in a day than most people in previous millennia processed in a lifetime. We live in an age where many people have access to information that lets them see problems, grapple with complex systems, and even call out what seems wrong.

This heightened awareness can feel like progress, but with all this knowledge…very little changes. With this access, you might wonder why all the stagnation, why aren’t we further along? Because awareness doesn’t require action.

Awareness allows us to understand without moving, to see without engaging, and to have knowledge without changing anything. That gap between awareness and action is where most things stall. Not because people don’t care—but because moving from insight to action is uncomfortable.

Moving to action asks something of us that knowing doesn’t, and it’s often messy. Action can challenge our perceived identity, relationships, and sense of belonging. Sadly, many choose to stay in awareness, rather than moving beyond what they know or think they know.

Awareness is never meant to be the finish line. It is actually where advancement begins.

The real provocation isn’t what we see. It’s what we’re willing to do with it.

If compassion has edges, and if those edges are shaped over time, then the question of expansion begins to take on a different quality. It is no longer simply about whether we have the capacity to care. It becomes more grounded, and perhaps more confronting.

What allows compassion to move in some moments, and not in others?

It is tempting to hold compassion as something contained within the individual—a quality that can be strengthened through intention or practice. But this view begins to feel incomplete when we notice how inconsistently compassion appears. There are moments when it comes forward with ease, and others when it does not seem available at all. The difference between those moments does not appear to sit entirely within a person. Something else is present—something that shapes what is possible in the interaction itself.

There are environments where people remain in conversation longer than expected. Where disagreement does not immediately close the space, but instead lingers long enough for something less certain to emerge. These moments are not always obvious, and they rarely announce themselves as significant, but they are powerful nonetheless. When they occur, there is often a subtle shift in the quality of the exchange. A slowing down. A sense that the conversation is not moving toward resolution, but toward something that has not yet taken form.

In earlier writing, I described disagreement as something disruptive—something that can feel like hitting a wall—but also as an invitation to move deeper rather than step away. That movement is not automatic. More often, the instinct is to retreat, to return to what feels certain, quickly closing the space that opened. And yet, occasionally, something else happens.

Someone asks a question without needing an answer.

A pause is held long enough for a different response to surface.

Someone remains present when it would be easier to withdraw.

These moments are small and easily overlooked. On their own, they may not seem to carry much weight. But they begin to suggest that compassion is not only a matter of intention. It is also a matter of condition. It is influenced by what the space between people allows.

There is a story that often emerges in conversations about the expansion of understanding. Daryl Davis, an African American musician, spent years in conversation with individuals who held deeply entrenched racist beliefs. His intention was not to debate or persuade, but to understand. Over time, some of those individuals left the positions they once held. It is difficult to isolate what, precisely, made that shift possible. There is no clear method to extract. But there was sustained contact, and a willingness to remain in relationship where most would not.

This is not a model that can or should be universally applied. Nor does it offer a simple answer to the complexities of division. But it does invite a question that is worth sitting with.

What becomes possible when someone stays in a conversation longer than expected?

What shifts, if anything, when the interaction is not cut short by discomfort or certainty?

In many contexts, the opposite tendency is more visible. Conversations become shorter. Positions become more defined. The distance between people settles into something that feels fixed. In that distance, compassion does not necessarily disappear, but it does not extend. It remains confined within the perceived safety of what is already known.

It may be that expansion does not begin with an effort to feel more, but with a different relationship to these moments. The moment where something could close, but does not. Where a response could be immediate, but is held back. Where a conclusion could be reached, but remains open.

This does not remove tension. If anything, it brings it into clearer view. But tension that is not immediately resolved can begin to change in character. It can become something that allows for awareness, rather than something that demands closure. A kind of dissonance that calls for a different quality of attention than agreement. This is where the idea of design begins to take on relational meaning.

What are the conditions that allow people to remain present with one another, even briefly, at the edge of discomfort?

What allows curiosity to persist where it might otherwise contract?

What allows a tense conversation to continue rather than collapse?

These questions do not lead to fixed answers. They shift with context, with people, with the nature of what is being encountered. But they begin to point toward something that feels increasingly relevant. Compassion does not expand in isolation. It expands, or contracts, within relationship—within the spaces we create and the ways we choose to engage within them.

If that is the case, then the work is not only internal. It is also situated in the interactions we participate in, the conversations we enter, and the moments we choose not to exit too quickly. These are not grand gestures. They are often small, almost imperceptible decisions. But over time, they shape the texture of our relationships and the boundaries of our concern.

There is no clear endpoint here—no moment where the circle is fully widened and remains that way. There are only encounters. Some brief, some sustained. Each one carries the possibility, however small, of extending beyond what is already familiar.

Perhaps it is enough to remain in that space long enough for something other to become visible.

Not to resolve difference, but to stay in its presence long enough for something else to emerge.

If compassion is not evenly distributed, the question is not simply whether it exists, but how it is shaped.

In reality, this is not an easy place to linger. It is more comfortable to believe that compassion is a matter of intention—that if we care enough, or try hard enough, it will naturally follow. But when we look more closely, intention is neither primary nor sufficient in the work of compassion.

There is more present— quiet, less visible, but persistent.

We like to believe we meet people at face value, but a tabula rasa is unattainable. We meet each other through layers of meaning—layers formed long before any encounter. We see one another through images, language, fragments of conversations, and repeated narratives accumulated over time. Sometimes we recognise these lenses, but more often we do not.

They form a personalised backdrop against which we make sense of what is in front of us.

When we notice difficulty in extending compassion, it can feel abrupt. Suddenly, we find ourselves at the jagged edge of a limitation we did not know existed. Not a deliberate one, but one that nonetheless holds. A wall we did not consciously build, yet one we have adapted to and now live within. And if we are curious, we might wonder how it formed.

Stories have something to do with this—not only the ones we choose to read or tell, but the ones that surround us. The narratives that define who is familiar and who is not; who is trustworthy and who is suspect; who is like us and who is not. These narratives are rarely presented as stories. They arrive as facts, as common sense, as “the way things are.”

Repeated often enough, they begin to feel concrete.

The Seventh Story by Gareth Higgins and Brian McLaren (2018) suggests that societies are shaped less by laws or revolutions than by the stories they live in. If that is the case, the boundaries of compassion may not rest solely within individuals but also within the stories that surround them. Through our culturally curated anthology, we learn—often without noticing—who belongs within our circle of concern and who remains just outside it.

What reinforces these narrative imprints is exposure. This matters deeply—not simply as information, but as what we encounter. Without direct contact or lived experience, we rely on what is available to us. Accessible, yes, but not neutral. These collected stories are shaped by history, power, and proximity.

It is easier to feel compassion for what we have come to understand. Extending it to the abstract or unfamiliar is more difficult.

Beneath conscious thought, a more instinctive process is at work. Our bodies can respond before our minds interpret. Unexpected gestures, unfamiliar tones, or unclear contexts can trigger a subtle alarm. This reflex is not inherently problematic; it is part of how we orient ourselves in the world.

But when these responses go unexamined, they begin to guide us in ways we may not intend. As curiosity narrows, distance can feel reasonable. And compassion, almost imperceptibly, begins to wane.

None of this suggests that compassion is out of reach. But it does suggest that it is not as immediate or automatic as we might assume. It is shaped by what we have seen—and equally by what we have not. By the patterns we have absorbed, and by those we have never had the opportunity to question.

The challenge shifts from how to become more compassionate to what informs our responses before compassion begins to flow. It calls for a deeper level of care and curiosity—one that asks:

What stories come to mind when we encounter someone unfamiliar?

What assumptions fill the space when we do not yet understand?

What remains unquestioned because it has always seemed true?

This work requires diligence, time, and a willingness to stay with discomfort longer than we might prefer. Its reward is the ability to notice without immediately resolving—to recognise that what feels natural may, in fact, be learned, and therefore open to change.

If compassion has edges, they are not fixed. They are fluid and shaped. And what is shaped can, over time, be reshaped—through encounter and inquiry rather than force.

With persistence, a kind of spaciousness may emerge—one that allows new stories to take root.

This is the second in a three-part series on compassion—how it forms, where it falters, and what it might take to expand it. In the final piece, we explore what it looks like to put that into practice.

Most of us would describe ourselves as compassionate.

Not in an abstract way, but in the quiet, ordinary sense. We care about people. We feel something when we see suffering. We want, at least in principle, for others to be well. And yet, if we sit with that assumption for a moment, something begins to feel incomplete. Because compassion, in practice, shows up unevenly.

There are people we instinctively understand, and others we struggle to relate to. Some situations move us immediately, and others we pass by with a quiet indifference. Not necessarily out of cruelty, but at times out of distance. Uncomfortable as it is, this pattern has been consistently observed.

A recent study on compassion by the Muhammad Ali Center found that while many people express a general desire to be compassionate, far fewer feel it across different groups. The edges are telling. Compassion tends to diminish toward those we perceive as distant, responsible for their circumstances, or outside our sense of “us.”

This suggests that compassion is more selective than absent.

There is a story that circulates from time to time about a man in Paris who climbed the outside of a building to rescue a child hanging from a balcony. It is a striking image—not just because of the physical act, but because of its immediacy. There was no time to deliberate, to categorise, or to weigh consequences. There was only a human being in danger, and another human being responding.

The man, was at the time an undocumented migrant.

Before that moment, he would have existed, for most people, as an abstraction. A category. Perhaps even a problem to be solved, depending on one’s perspective. After that moment, he was widely recognised as a hero.

What changed was not the person himself. It was the story told about him.

We often imagine that our responses to others are grounded in stable values; we are either compassionate or we are not. But what if compassion behaves less like a fixed trait and more like a shifting boundary—one shaped by familiarity, narrative, and the subtle cues we receive about who belongs and who does not?

In a blog post I wrote in 2011, What I Learned from Disagreement (one day I will archive it here), I described disagreement as “hitting a wall”—something disruptive that forces us out of a comfortable understanding and into something less certain, but potentially more meaningful.

Those words feel truer now than they did then.

When someone outside our assumed circle acts in a way that is undeniably human—undeniably generous—it interrupts the story we have been holding. That interruption invites us to reconsider where our boundary lies.

It is relatively easy to feel compassion for those who feel close to us—people who share our experiences, our language, our assumptions about the world. It becomes more difficult when that sense of familiarity falls away. This is where the conversation about compassion becomes more demanding.

When we cannot easily place a person or situation within our existing understanding, we begin to rely on broader narratives. Cultural, social, political, and national narratives are efficient, but they are also blunt. They reduce complexity. They create distance.

And distance, more often than not, narrows compassion.

There is a tension emerging.

On one hand, there is a growing desire for more compassion, more understanding, less division. On the other, there is a persistent pattern of fragmentation—a sense that people are becoming more entrenched, more certain of their positions, and less willing to extend generosity beyond familiar lines.

It may be too simple to call this hypocrisy. It may be more accurate to see it as a reflection of how compassion actually works—aspirational in principle, conditional in practice.

If that is the case, perhaps the more useful question is not whether we are compassionate, but where it begins to shift.

Where does it become harder to imagine the inner world of another?

Where does explanation replace inquiry?

Where does “they” quietly take the place of “we?”

This is not about eliminating boundaries. It is about understanding the purpose they serve. As Brené Brown’s work suggests, boundaries are often what make genuine empathy possible in the first place. Without them, we lose the sense of safety that allows us to remain open.

But there is a difference between boundaries that protect something and boundaries that exclude. One allows for connection with clarity. The other limits connection before it even begins.

What Mamoudou Gassama’s story offers is not just a lesson in heroism. It offers a moment in which the usual filters fell away, and action preceded categorisation. In doing so, it reveals something about the rest of us.

Not that we lack compassion, but that we have learned—often unconsciously—where to place its limits.

If we can agree that compassion is worth valuing, then the research suggests that the real work is not about gaining more.

Instead, it may be about noticing, with a bit more honesty, where we quietly decide whether compassion is warranted—and staying there just long enough to ask why.

By now, you may have noticed something. Or something is becoming apparent

Understanding bias doesn’t necessarily change how we see.

We can recognise confirmation bias… and still defend our position.
We can understand fear… and still react to urgency.
We can see how belonging shapes perception… and still hesitate to step outside it.

Which raises a subtle but important question:

If we can see our biases…
why do they still hold?

What Sits Beneath What We See

Throughout this series, we’ve explored how perception is shaped:

By what we already believe.
By the communities we inhabit.
By the moral frameworks we carry.
By fear, urgency, and incentives.
By the limits of our own awareness.

But beneath all of that, something even more foundational is at work.

Belief.

Not just the beliefs we can easily name — but the ones we rarely question because they feel like reality itself.

The Beliefs We Don’t Know We Hold

Many of the beliefs that shape our perception aren’t explicit.

They sound more like:

“If I question this, I might lose my place.”
“If I change my mind, I’ll be seen differently.”
“If I’m uncertain, I’m not credible.”
“If I don’t respond quickly, I’m falling behind.”

These beliefs don’t announce themselves.

They operate quietly—shaping what feels safe to consider, what feels threatening to explore, and what feels impossible to entertain.

Which means that bias is not just a thinking problem.

It’s often a protection strategy.

Why Insight Alone Doesn’t Change Us

This is where many of us get stuck.

We assume that once we understand something, we will naturally shift.

But insight doesn’t dissolve the beliefs that protect us.

In fact, sometimes it threatens them.

Because seeing more clearly can disrupt:

Our sense of certainty.
Our sense of identity.
Our sense of belonging.

And when those feel at risk, something in us tightens.

Not because we’re resistant.
Because we’re human.

A Personal Recognition

There have been moments when I could see something more clearly—and still felt myself hesitate.

Not because I disagreed.

But because I could sense what it might cost.

A shift in how I was perceived.
A tension in a relationship.
A loosening of something that once felt stable.

And in those moments, the question wasn’t:

“Is this true?”

It was:

“Am I ready for what seeing this might change?”

That’s a different kind of question.
And it doesn’t have a purely intellectual answer.

Three Beliefs That Shape Most of What We See

If you look closely, many of our patterns trace back to a few core beliefs:

Comfort and Safety
→ “I need to feel stable, certain, and secure.”

Identity and Ego
→ “I need to remain recognisable—to myself and to others.”

Certainty and Control
→ “I need to know, to resolve, to feel in control of what’s happening.”

These aren’t flaws.
They’re human.

But when they operate unconsciously, they narrow what we’re able to see.

Seeing Differently Requires More Than Thinking Differently

If bias is reinforced by belief, then shifting perception requires more than new information.

It requires awareness, practice, and often, relationship.

The kind of environment where it becomes safe enough to question what once felt unquestionable.

Where uncertainty doesn’t mean loss
Where curiosity doesn’t mean disloyalty.
Where changing your mind doesn’t feel like losing yourself.

Why This Work Is Done Together

This is something I’ve come to recognise more clearly over time.

We don’t outgrow bias alone.

We grow through conversation, reflection, challenge, and shared experience

Because it’s in those spaces that we begin to notice not just what we think — but what we believe, and why.

There’s a moment that tends to come, somewhere along the way, when you begin to see how bias shapes perception.

At first, it can feel clarifying.
You start to notice patterns.
You recognise familiar reactions — in yourself, in others.

Things begin to make more sense

And then, if you stay with it a little longer, something else emerges.

A quieter realisation.

Not just that others are shaped by what they can’t see —
but that you are too.

Not in the past.
Now.

And not because you’re unwilling or unaware.

But because there are simply things you cannot yet perceive from where you stand.

The Bias We Rarely Consider: Consciousness Bias

We’ve explored many biases so far — confirmation, fear, allegiance, and incentives.

But there is one that sits beneath them in a quieter way: Consciousness bias.

The idea is simple, but not always comfortable:

Some things cannot be seen from where we currently stand.

Not because we’re unwilling.
Not because we’re unintelligent.
Not even because we’re defensive.

But because our current level of awareness—shaped by experience, context, and development — has limits.

A Moment I Didn’t Recognise Until Later

There are conversations I’ve had in the past that I remember differently now.

At the time, I felt clear.
Certain, even.

I could articulate my perspective.
I could justify it.
I could defend it.

And I left those conversations thinking I had seen things accurately.

Looking back, what stands out is not what I said.

It’s what I couldn’t hear.

There were perspectives I filtered out without noticing.
Questions I didn’t know how to ask.
Tensions I resolved too quickly.

Not because I was closed.

But because I didn’t yet have the capacity to see what was being offered.

That recognition didn’t come in the moment.

It came later—after experience, after discomfort, after something in me had shifted.

Growth Changes What Is Visible

We often think of growth as adding information.

But more often, it’s about expanding perception.

What once felt obvious becomes incomplete.
What once felt threatening becomes understandable.
What once felt certain becomes… more nuanced.

Developmental psychologists and contemplative traditions alike point to this:

As we grow, what we are able to perceive changes.

Not just what we believe — but what we can even register.

Which raises a question worth sitting with:

What might be true that I’m currently unable to see?

Not as self-doubt.
But as openness.

Why This Softens Judgment

If this is true, it changes how we see others as well.

Because when someone holds a view that feels limited, misinformed, or even harmful, the instinct is often to ask:

“How can they not see this?”

But consciousness bias invites a different question:

“What might they not yet have the capacity to see?”

That doesn’t imply agreement.
And it doesn’t justify harm.

But it introduces something often missing in our conversations: proportion. And sometimes, compassion.

The Tension: Awareness Without Superiority

There’s a subtle trap here.

Once we begin to see more, it’s easy to assume:

I see clearly now.

But that assumption is often just another layer of bias.

Because whatever we can now see…
there are still things we cannot.

Awareness is not a destination.
It’s a moving edge.

And the more we grow, the more we realise how partial our view has always been.

Why This Work Requires Patience

In a culture that rewards speed, clarity, and strong opinions, this can feel frustrating.

We want resolution.
We want certainty.
We want to land somewhere stable.

But perception doesn’t evolve on command.

It unfolds:

• through experience

• through reflection

• through discomfort

• through relationship

And often, through moments we didn’t choose.

You might ask yourself:

When have I looked back and realised I couldn’t see something I now can?
Where do I feel most certain right now—and least open?
Who do I struggle to understand—and what might be outside my current frame of reference?
What would it mean to grow my capacity to see, rather than defend what I already see?

Again—no fixing.
Just noticing.

Looking Ahead

Because often, what limits our perception isn’t just how we think —

but what we’ve come to believe about safety, identity, and what it means to belong.
